"The Fair has provided a forum for agriculture interest since the very beginning of farming in Michigan; it was a source of inspiration for farmers to improve the quality of their product, and it has always been a valued recreational outlet for the farming community."

Unfortunately, the "farming community" surrounds miles outside of
Detroit because Detroit is no longer a farming community itself - at
least in the sense of agriculture.
Simply implying that although farmers still travel from areas outside
of Detroit, there are nil to none that come from farms in Detroit
proper anymore.
My personal view on this is that the State Fair should be more centrally located to accommodate farmers; the gas they use to transport livestock; and to promote the attendance by more of the farming community.
Financially or economically speaking, I'm sure that Detroit benefits from this event, assuming that attendance isn't down. When the price of admission ($25 for adults) makes it a wee bit difficult for some people on a budget, overall it's still in step with the current economy, making it affordable for many.
Without having researched the attendance statistics, I wonder if it would be more beneficial for the farmers to have the state fair in a central location and still have popular entertainment. Some might argue that you can't get celebs like Mitch Ryder or 3 Dog Night to travel to Kalamazoo, as an example of an alternative site; and so how difficult would it be to have some good entertainment at the fair if it were held more centrally?
Recall the day that I travelled to Almont and Imlay City? If not, you can search my posts for it. There was a local State Fair in town and I have to admit that I had no idea that there was a fairgrounds there. Hence, assuming that outlying farming communities have their own fairgrounds, then how much longer might farmers travel into Detroit with the current state of gas prices, farming hardships, economy, etc?
I can (embarrassingly) say that the last time I was at the Michigan State Fair was when I was a child. Let's just say... over 25 yrs ago. A gal that I went to high school with is the State Fair's coodinator and planner . She'd probably shoot me if she read my post.
