Art & Photography for sale

I have some new art and photography uploaded at RedBubble.com in case you're interested.  I have purchased laminated wall prints and a calendar, and they are top notch.  Prints from RedBubble are quality with exact colors, clarity and all are as good as the artist's intended.  I've been impressed, as well as the other RedBubble members.

Enter bragging rights here:  I have been featured as a "Featured 3D artist" at Bryce & Beyond, a RedBubble group for 3D artists.  My work "Rebirth" has been featured in a number of groups which came as a nice surprise.  RedBubble also thought it was worthy enough to feature on the home page for a day.  :)

So when you get a chance, come over and take a look, and visit the other artists at RedBubble too.  You'll be glad you did.  RedBubble's goal is to showcase and help sell the quality works of art and photography for its members.

Int'l Hackers fund $55m to Terrorists

Default Password Use Opened Telephone Networks to International Hacking Scheme

Federal authorities in New Jersey have indicted three individuals in the Philippines who must now either be extradited or volunteer to come to the US to face charges.

Authorities indicate that the plan was somehow connected to funding terrorist plots.

The calls were made through corporate networks that the suspects hacked into using a brute force attack, finding access through PBXs that had default passwords. The indictment says that Pakistani operators of the Italian call centers paid the Philippine hackers $100 for each open PBX they found.

Now it's time for the hard drive

  • Jun 9, 2009

Been clearing out my hard drive again.  I don't know what to do with all my early work.  I never look at it and when I looked closer, a lot of it was made for Flickr (a couple of years ago) and at a size that is not conducive to print.  First, I reorganized all my images in folders labeled by category.  IE: people; portraits; landscapes; skies; animals, etc. and WIP (work in process).  They were originally categorized by date (the way the camera uploaded to the computer).  Then I went through some 7000+ pictures and art and deleted EVERYTHING that looked like crap and anything that I felt I would have no need for.   I've already noticed how much easier it is to find an image by categories than by date!  Holy shit.  Just wish I had something to tag my images with, without installing another piece of software.

After everything was nice and neat, I said, "Now what?"  So I've been archiving my older work as contact sheets that I can create with FastStone's Image Viewer.  I can also archive them to .pdf format but not sure of the quality once the images are extracted from the .pdf.  So I decided since most of the images that I'm archiving this way are older works, a contact sheet might be best and I can always create a photo book with them that would look like a proof book.  In this situation, since most of these images are no larger than 1024 x 768, I probably won't be printing them and IF I were to use them as part of a portfolio, these contact sheet styles should be good enough to get my style and imaginative creations across to the viewer.

It's a lot of work cleaning off a hard drive.  I have a 250 gig hard drive and 1/2 of it is full.  The ironic part of it, is that a good part of that 1/2 is Microsoft patches and updates.  You need a hard drive just for that bullshit.  Really ticks me off.  I'm beginning to lean towards a Linux OS.  Been asking questions of some folks that are using Linux and husband and Alex use it.  For me, I would need another background program that is free, that will read some of my graphics software.  Other than that, I could run a dual boot system (upon boot up, computer asks if you want to boot up to Microsoft OS or Linux) or not.  I think I would like to see how the Linux will work before deciding.

So I guess you could say that I'm scaling back on the garbage and getting myself ready for the professional.  But had to start with the hard drive before it gets hairier.  LOL  Would really like a new computer but unless I win the lottery, or win a contest, it's hard to justify as an option on our current budget.

Tomorrow is PhaseOne day.  Need to sign up for the seminar even though a $20+k camera is DEFINITELY outside the budget.

Young Pulsar Shows its Hand

  • Apr 17, 2009
Don't quote me as totally correct but I recall something about a "balance" in all things. Mirrored objects; opposites attract; laws of physics; whatever the case. As I read this article I thought to myself, if this is considered "the most powerful electromagnetic generator in the Galaxy," is it there for a reason? What would happen if it did not exist? What effects does it have in the universe beside what they can see here?

This article was truly an eye opener for me, regarding how advanced and infinite the universe is. I suddenly felt small in comparison.
clipped from www.redorbit.com

The pulsar is a rapidly spinning neutron star which is spewing energy out into the space around it to create complex and intriguing structures, including one that resembles a large cosmic hand.

B1509 is spinning completely around almost 7 times every second and is releasing energy into its environment at a prodigious rate -- presumably because it has an intense magnetic field at its surface, estimated to be 15 trillion times stronger than the Earth’s magnetic field.

The combination of rapid rotation and ultra-strong magnetic field makes B1509 one of the most powerful electromagnetic generators in the Galaxy

Is the Adam Walsh Act failing in the States?

  • Mar 11, 2009
I suppose the $12 to $37 million that it would cost each state to implement isn't worth a child's life. The individual states would rather loose 10% of their funding than put this act in motion by July 27. Sad shame.

States Failing to Comply with Sex Offender Registry

03.10.09

by Chloe Albanesius

States are required to comply with the Adam Walsh Act by July 27 or lose a portion of their federal funding for state and local law enforcement agencies. But three years after the bill's enactment, not one state has made any real progress on implementation, a House Judiciary chairman said Tuesday.

"I do think it will help reduce crime," said Ernie Allen, president and CEO for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. "The system in place today in most states … just doesn't work, and there needs to be a commitment, whether it's with federal dollars or state dollars, to do a meaningful follow up. Right now it's not being done."

Alaska's Volcano "Redoubt" on Orange Alert

Serious stuff Maynard.

Seismic unrest continues at Redoubt. Activity is still well above normal background levels. Nothing new to report -- seismic levels have again remained about the same over the last few hours.

AVO continues to observe potential activity with seismic, satellite and radar data. The volcano has not erupted.

An AVO observation flight this afternoon reported no sign of ash emission, but observed significant steaming from a new melt depression at the mouth of the summit crater near the vent area of the 1989-90 eruption.
The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Volcano Alert Level remains at WATCH.

Legitimate Gripe re Abuse of Taxpayer Money

  • Jan 23, 2009

"It was only a few months ago that we were being told that Merrill Lynch, among others, desperately needed billions of dollars to survive, that without injections of new capital the financial system would come crashing down around us. If any of this was true, it should have been impossible for Merrill to pay out $15 billion in bonuses."

Wall Street’s Sick Psychology of Entitlement

instead of using that to repair its financial health, it simply put the money into the pockets of its employees. There is no way to defend this disgusting payout.

Their brains have no caught up with the idea that they are working in broken institutions that would be unable to pay to keep the lights on if not for the fact that Washington has given them billions of taxpayer dollars.

Being really good at what you do doesn’t matter if your firm is broke—and your firm is broke. It’s now on taxpayer supported life-support.

Failing firms that cannot afford to pay for talent lose that talent to successful firms. That’s an important part of market discipline.

when you pay yourself a bonus with taxpayer money you are simply taking money from someone who earned it and giving it to someone who didn't.

Perhaps instead of a bailout, we should have confined the TARP to overseeing the orderly disolution of failed financial institutions.

Chinese Art-Copying Sweatshops

FULHAM PALACE EXAMINES CHINESE ART-COPYING SWEATSHOPS

photo of two me in shorts standing up in a room painting

While much is made of the astonishing economic growth of the Chinese economy, many millions of ordinary Chinese people still live in poverty.

Dafen is a small suburb of the city of Shenzhen, which has developed a reputation as an ‘art village’, where thousands of artists go from all over the country to find work in factories, churning out copies of western masterpieces for export to Europe and North America.

Many of the Dafen artists are Chinese art college graduates who work in the picture factories there for up to 16 hours a day. They usually get paid around 20 pence per painting and may have to produce anything up to 30 pieces a day to make a living wage to support their families.

Their works are exported en masse with some being sold for hundreds of pounds. American retail giant WalMart recently commissioned more than 50,000 paintings from Dafen.

A Sundry of Thoughts Over a Year's Time

  • Dec 20, 2008
  • Post a comment

And I know I've been lazy about writing on my blog.  There have been many times when I thought about it and then sit down to the computer and find myself answering emails; writing few in return; creating art and spending more time with my camera and learning techniques.

I was laid off in mid-July and knew it was coming for awhile.  Had worked with the company back in 2000 and as they say, 'some things never change' and this proved truthful once again.  In the process of considering a career change and avidly researching the idea, I received an email from a CPA firm.  The description was exactly what I've been thinking for a few years, I'd much rather do.  Having been a sole proprietor of a bookkeeping business in my past, and not having found the perfect niche here in Michigan, I had considered doing it once again.  Ultimately, I preferred the idea of working for a CPA firm on a seasonal basis with some time off or the flexibility for it during the summer months.

Low and behold, the email for an interview.  I know it was not a place that I applied, so it is still unbeknown to me where they obtained my resume.  Most likely an online job search agent.

Started working with them in October and learning new things all the time.  I must admit however, that as the days close in on year end, I've been spoiled with the part time status and now must shift gears for full time for 3 to 4 months.

The boys are growing taller and smarter.  Acing classes all the way to honor roll.  The oldest is taking college level courses in preparation for his future.  Good kids.

The hub is still working and doesn't foresee economic strife at his location .... yet.  The technology industry is still moving ahead so far.

Aside from the normal every day living routine, there hasn't been much in the way of travel, reunions and such.  Been a very low key year.  I voted and my vote didn't win but I was pretty much undecided all the way anyhow.  So I'll bear with the choice of the majority and see how it goes.

In the meantime, stay warm, stay safe, be cautious but have fun.  Merry Christmas and many blessings in the New Year!

Kathy

From Algae to Oil - A tasty conversion

  • Aug 28, 2008
Hmmm... I don't know if I should be saying "Yum" instead.

Similarly, I wonder how the cholesterol count adds up. LOL

OriginOil Transforms Algae into "New Oil"

Sapphire Energy isn't the only company developing an algae-to-oil technology. OriginOil also has its own proprietary technology to transform algae into what the company calls "new oil," which will be a direct competitor to petroleum.

OriginOil, by the way, uses low-cost and energy efficient oil extraction method by pre-cracking algae cell walls through microwaves and then using Ultrasonic Quantum Fracturing to separate oil from mass.

The oil, for example, could be used directly as a straight vegetable oil, although it could also be refined into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil. Additionally, it could be made into solvents and plastics. The algae biomass, on the other hand, could be made into ethanol, methanol, hydrogen, and other alcohol-based fuels. In short, no part of the algae is wasted--everything could be made into fuel.
